📝 • REVIEW •

Author leads the reader to get in touch and understand the human psyche with real psychiatric sessions of the characters present, in relation to the events that have taken place. Her thesis is inspired by love and what comes from it when it turns into obsession; and how the latter can become dangerous for one's own life and that of others. The theme of the book is set in the present day and the writing, despite some errors, is quite linear. It consists of 355 pages and divided into three parts.

The chapters inside are short and divided by characters, this makes reading smoother and lighter. I think it is very interesting from a psychological point of view for who is as passionate as me about psychology.  The twists keep the reader glued to the pages, but not from the first ones, which are, in my opinion, a little flatter and consequently tiring. From the second part onwards it kept me in suspense to such an extent that once finished I immediately returned to the first page to search for all the key elements. I read a bit of everything but those who know me, know that I prefer psychological thrillers and this book certainly deserves the label of its genre; I can firmly say it deserved my attention.

✨ • ADVICE •

I'll spare you the phrases I often read on book recommendations, “because it's beautiful”, “because it's written well”, “because the characters are nice” and blah blah blah; these are all too subjective opinions that I personally do not feel like giving, so my advice is aimed at those who love thrillers and especially psychologists (like me); to those who love psychology, because it might be interesting to see how the author approaches it; and to those who have never read this genre, because it sends a strong message to those who know how to grasp it that brings back to parallel situations, more or less serious, of those who have experienced them firsthand or have only heard of them. Having said that, thank you.

ENJOY THE READING

🖋 • TITLE • "THE MINDS OF BILLY MILLIGAN"

🔏 • AUTHOR • Danyel Keyes (1981)

📜 • LENGTH • 544 pages.

💸 • COVER PRICE • € 19.00

Won an Edgar Award nomination. A TRUE and shocking story that tells of the first case in the history of the United States to be found not guilty of serious crimes for reasons of insanity.

📖 • SYNOPSIS

I want to clarify that the review you are about to read does not contain any spoilers.  The novel begins on 22nd October 1977, with the search for a man responsible for kidnapping, theft and rape at the expense of two students and one nurse. The man they're looking for is called William Stanley Milligan, whom we will call Billy, the book's protagonist. During the capture, taken aback in his apartment, the man is literally frightened by the intervention of the agents and continues to say that he had done nothing. Beginning to apologize by saying that if he had hurt someone it was not his intention. Once arrested with overwhelming evidence and testimonies of assaulted women, his lawyers begin to sense strange attitudes in him, as if each time they are dealing with more people. Psychologists and psychiatrists are called to investigate the case and a shocking truth emerges, the man is affected by dissociative personality disorder, in which 24 PEOPLE live. I remarked "people" precisely because the personalities within it did not want them to be defined as such, but demanded that they be addressed as people.

📝 • REVIEW •

“Imagine that all of us, many people, many of whom you have never met... we find ourselves in a dark room. In the middle of that room, on the floor, there is a patch of light. Anyone who steps into the light comes out on the spot, and is out of the real world, has consciousness. This is the person that others - those outside - see and hear and to whom they react. Others can continue to do the usual things, study, sleep, talk or play. But whoever is outside, whoever he is, must be very careful not to reveal the existence of others."

As I said, we talk about them as REAL and OWN people, each of whom has their own physical characteristics, their own accent, their own interests and even a significant difference in IQ found between one and the other. The people in question are classified into three groups

The ten most famous people belong to:

- Billy, the protagonist

- Arthur, 22 years old from England, the most intelligent self-taught in many scientific studies. It is he who dictates the rules and chooses who can come out and who not, the same who has divided the personalities into these three groups.

- Ragen, 23 years old with a purely Yugoslav accent. It is the strongest takes control in dangerous situations. I experience in weapons and martial arts.

- Allen, 18, manipulator, the one who goes out most often to deal with "outsiders". He smokes, plays the drums and paints portraits.

- Tommy, 16, escape artist. He paints landscapes, plays the sax and is an expert in electronics.

- David, 8 years old, is called" guardian of pain ", takes the place in situations of malaise of all kinds, which may be physical or psychological.

- Danny, 14, is the scariest, he only paints still lifes.

- Christene, 3 years old, English and intelligent, suffers from dyslexia.

- Christopher, 13 years old, Christene's brother, plays the harmonica.

- Adalana, 19, lesbian. Solitary and introverted, she takes care of the home for everyone.

The undesirable (thirteen) defined by Arthur because they are dangerous for them and for others as they perform illegal actions or acts that put Billy in uncomfortable situations. Among these we find:

- Philip, Kevin, Walter, April, Samuel, MarkSteve, Lee, Jason, Robert, Shawn, Martin, Timothy.

The Master, 26, the sum of all twenty-three alter egos merged into one. "His appearance and collaboration made this book possible."

There is a huge division of thought in the many characters of this story, in which we find those who believe and recognize Billy's disorder as a real psychiatric disease; those who face it as if they were not dealing with a psychosis case but a simple neurosis, including incompetent doctors; and who thinks that Billy lies to try to escape the sentence. The novel is divided into three books:

- First book: "The time of confusion" where the story begins with the capture of Billy Milligan and continues with the treatment related to the recognition of his disorder and the criminal trials for the crimes he committed.

- Second book: "The Master", the central part of the book in which the writer tells the life of Billy from his childhood, analyzing in detail the various "people" that reside in the protagonist's mind and how they have emerged over time, a for one, following various circumstances related to Billy's life.

- Third book: “Beyond madness”. Here the writer picks up where he left off in the first part of the book, continuing with the story of the trials and medical histories of the doctors from Billy's capture onwards. Inside there are also a preface and an afterword.

In the preface, the writer tells of his meeting with Billy, the first individual with multiple personality observed 24 hours a day and the only one whose multiplicity was witnessed under oath by four psychiatrists and a psychologist. He himself says “I was skeptical but interested. I realized that Billy in the second meeting was very different from the young man I met earlier. Then one day he went to meet a <<fusion>> revealing a new character (the master) we become aware and conscious of all personalities from the moment of creation. For the most part, those who knew Milligan, including the victims, ended up accepting his diagnosis. The doubts I showed during his tales gradually turned into conviction as my investigations proved their veracity."

In the afterword, the writer tells how each other has evolved after the publication of the book and the demonstrations of multiple personalities studied with neural monitoring techniques such as EEG, in which the traces of these patients showed marked differences both with respect to the central personality and between of them. The author's purpose in this novel is to invite you to deepen your studies on the mind, especially of patients suffering from this disorder, as it has something to offer all of us in terms of mind and body control. He himself tells us "I believe that in fact multiple personalities can be one of those experiments of nature from which we will learn a lot about ourselves."

👩🏻‍🏫 • PERSONALCONSIDERATION •

So, I tell you that this book can be complex for various reasons:

-1 the length if you are used to reading little books, as it has 537 pages.

-2 Use very specific medical terminologies that not everyone knows.

-3 The characters are many and some of the same names, as the people inside it really existed.

-4 Some parts run off quickly while others may be a bit heavy, I myself admit that in some places I struggled to continue. A novel like this is very complicated to write especially for the chronological reconstruction of the events.

✨ • ADVICE•

In any case, I would like to recommend it to EVERYONE, this novel deserves to be in the libraries of every reader who may be interested in psychology and not, in the same way that each of us deserves to read a similar tale of a TRUE story at least once. in life. A story that caused a scandal in America.

🖋 • TITLE • 🧟‍♀️ "THE MYSTERY OF THE RISEN CHILD".

🔏 • AUTHOR • Vincenzo Malavolti (2020).

📜 • LENGTH • 126 pages.

📖 • SYNOPSIS

On 30th September 1963, during an evening of celebration in a small hilltop village, a shocking event will change the lives of many of those present. Marina, a beautiful 6-year-old girl with blond curls and her big gray eyes, suddenly dies the evening before her very first day of school, throwing the whole family into grief, which will gradually begin to crumble. Forty years later, at midnight that same day, the sound of a bell breaks the silence of the house in which he lived, putting his aunt and sister in front of a disturbing reality. The succession of strange episodes and unexpected deaths will bring dismay in the house and among the few people who know Marina's return. A story with tender and dark aspects, shrouded in the deepest of mysteries, which will leave you with many doubts about the theological and scientific aspects discussed so far. A melancholy and moving horror.

📝 • REVIEW

The novel is inspired by a tragic episode that really happened to the writer, at an early age, discussed in the introduction, where the sudden death of a little play friend of his is mentioned, which will bring him later, since the age of almost 5 years, to ask substantial questions about faith and the existence of God. This is the theme around which "the mystery of the risen child" revolves, a novel in which absolute faith is compared with science and atheism. The author's intent is precisely to lead the reader to question death, the destination of the spirit of those who leave, and what inevitably belongs to each of us. The succession of numerous events even makes one doubt the unconscious state of the living during sleep and the veracity of the events that merge with dreams. Precisely with regard to this, there are those who argue (as does Vincenzo Malavolti) that when an individual sleeps, in reality, the soul detaches itself from the body, wandering in places and actually experiencing the circumstances we call "dreams". This melancholy and at times distressing horror will put you in front of various and many questions about it, leaving you with a bitter taste in your mouth and a series of doubts on a subject that has not yet been proven. The book has a total of 124 pages [including an introduction in which the author narrates his tragic past experience].

👩🏻‍🏫 • PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS

The details are meticulously highlighted and sometimes repeated; a way of writing that I did not mind and that brought me back to the stubbornness of the directors to point out the details of the characters which then remain more impressed. On this new edition there are slight typos and inaccuracies which appear as obvious typos, not very annoying as I have seen in other books. In any case, the text flows very quickly, I myself have read it (very carefully) in just over 2 hours. Honestly, and this is a pure and personal consideration, despite the interesting title and plot, the layout of the cover lowered my expectations on the content of the text, on which I must admit ... I changed my mind

Ps: An urban legend tells that the little girl, perfectly described as in the book, was seen wandering in the cemetery. Happy reading 🥀

🖋 • TITLE • "BROKEN LIFE"

📖 • SYNOPSIS

Isabella is a young girl from Reggio Emilia, of Calabrian origins, second daughter of the classic and perfect family. Model student, close to maturity, who thinks of nothing but studying. One day she accidentally meets a handsome boy 4 years older than her who, from an unusual collision in the street, arouses in her sensations never experienced before. One evening, convinced by her classmate, much more self-confident than her and with interests that are anything but common to hers, they go to a disco where she sees Roberto again (the boy met by chance) who was part of a rock band and that evening was playing right there. That night the spark strikes, a love at first sight that pushes them to bed, where Isabella becomes pregnant. Although Roberto, joyful of becoming a father, begins to fantasize about the child, Isabella's family will be anything but happy with the news. Her father forced her to have an abortion and her mother, under his control, accompanied her to the hospital to make sure that this happens. From this imposed abortion, Isabella's perfect life will change forever, throwing her into an abyss from which it will be difficult to re-emerge. A diary that becomes an engaging novel, short but very intense. The tale is inspired by a true story.

✍🏻 • REVIEW

The novel is entirely narrated in the first person, and the setting of the writing gives the reader the idea that he is reading the protagonist's secret diary. The way in which certain aspects are described (feelings, pains, shortcomings, fears, regrets and remorse), cause a certain sense of anguish and sadness that inevitably pushes us to immerse ourselves in the now destroyed life of this poor girl, and to hope that she will be able to recover. his life and come to his senses. The topic dealt with is really sad, as, unfortunately, especially in countries where people's thoughts count more than their own lives and that of the family, the obsessive control that parents have over their children's lives often leads them to make mistakes and to get lost. This novel opens the mind and confronts us with realities that unfortunately exist and have persisted for years. People will always talk and will talk anyway, whether they have a reason or not, but life is one and everyone deserves to live it as they see fit. I hope that reading does not pass indifferent in the eyes of all those people who tend to bear their name before the will of their children. The task of parents is to guide and support them in their choices, advising what is more appropriate to do and what not, but never, ever hinder their life. In this case, the fear of gossip and judgments has forever broken the life of a girl, and a daughter, with an enviable character and behavior. The cover fits us perfectly as, in the novel, the Greek statue is reported in the dreams of the girl where she herself expresses her discomfort by comparing herself to it:
"I dreamed of being a statue of greek with no head, amputated left arm and hollow body. It's how I feel right now. "".

☝🏻 • PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS

As usual, I did not miss typos and small typos, which I now justify in all books because I always find them (and I do too) but anyway ... I point them out. In the last part the title "broken life" is too often repeated and various synonyms that annoy me a little, because I hate repetitions even when I find two 4-5 pages apart. I would have preferred it to be a little longer as in some places it goes too fast and gave me the impression of missing pieces (although I think it is a problem for those who do not have the habit of reading short novels). I must certainly add that, even if short, it is a very intense and sometimes crude novel (in the positive sense of the term). The novel runs very well, I finished it without even realizing it.

✨ • ADVICE

I recommend reading to all kids because fun is the basis of the life of all young people, but unfortunately - the line between fun and excitement is so thin - that very often the situation gets out of hand, becoming, in some cases, irrecoverable. This "fictional diary" will make you understand how sad the life of those who unwittingly tread too much on the hand can be. I also recommend it, but not least, to all parents, especially teenagers, because you can learn a lot from this story by listening, from the point of view of a girl like many others, how your behavior affects the lives of your children.

🖋 • TITLE • "Escape from the black plague"

🔏 • AUTHOR • Vincenzo Malavolti

📜 • LENGTH • 168 pages

💸 • COVER PRICE • € 14.00

📖 • SYNOPSIS

Lorenzo and Angelica, 20 and 16, are the protagonists of the love story that tells this novel set in 1341. Young and beautiful, falling in love, at first sight, they are forced to flee, to fulfill their dream of love, victims in the customs of their time - not very inclined to marriages between different classes - moving from Genoa to Caffa, the most distant and richest colony of the Genoese Republic. It will be from this city, which has become the "Queen of the Black Sea", that, in 1347, the scenario that will give life to the greatest tragedy of all time will be unleashed: the Black Plague. The "great death", carried by both man and mice, carriers of infected fleas, will begin to invade the whole Mediterranean and the countries bordering it, to reach the extreme borders of all of Europe, killing more than 1/3 of the population. The two young people will begin to flee the pandemic in order to return to Genoa, their homeland, and in the hope of finding their loved ones safe and sound, but the pandemic will precede them.

✍🏻 • REVIEW

Background: As already mentioned in the plot, the novel is set in the first half of the fourteenth century. The historical content it contains is a real cultural baggage, as epidemics are mentioned starting from 166, including the Justinian plague in 541, up to 2012, the year of the approval of the drug against the Black Plague, including the wars between Italian regions - including Marco Polo's imprisonment - and beyond; the struggle between the Genoese colonies against the Mongol Empire, which gave rise to the spread of the Black Death with the first bacteriological war in history (obviously the number of deaths it caused are not overlooked). These are some of the concepts mentioned or discussed within the story, but I will not list them all so as not to dwell on them, as some of the details mentioned are not reported even in the classic school texts. A historical text in all respects but impeccably fictionalized, in which the events are perfectly inserted within the story between the two lovers, such as to thrill the public in reading without ever getting bored. There are 16 footnotes, which allow you to deepen the topics covered without ever losing the thread of the narrative. In the afterword, which is also very much appreciated, the author describes in detail the strain of the Black Plague (and not only) from its appearance, the effects on humans and its course, its diffusion, up to the discovery of the cure.

The love story: The impediment of the love story between Lorenzo and Angelica, by the latter's father, reminded me of "Romeo and Juliet". The characters are perfectly described as well as the landscapes. The flight of the two through the various countries allows a 360 degree view of the landscapes touched and devastated by the pandemic, a real journey through the pages. The love between the two is the one dreamed of by all women, Lorenzo a strong and beautiful young man, does the impossible for Angelica, just as beautiful, trying to save her from the plague and isolate her as much as possible from the real facts, taking on all the responsibilities and concerns of the situation. It is truly impossible not to immerse yourself in history and not fall in love with the two, with this unparalleled love that will accompany the reader from the beginning to the end of the story. I could do a 1000 page review of a 168 page book, but none of it would do it justice. I admit that I cried for despair in some moments, and for joy in others, what to say... beautiful. I found some typos, but not jammers.

✨ • ADVICE

Here I'll make a list:

- history buffs, of course;

- not passionate about history: the text, as I said, is impeccably fictional and the historical part does not weigh at all (from this novel on, however, you will also be passionate about it);

- lovers of romance novels: the story between Angelica and Lorenzo cannot fail to please;

- medical enthusiasts: the plagues are carefully detailed; remedies with herbs are described, attributed at that time to witchcraft (when medicine did not yet know where to put their hand); explains how you come to understand the way to recovery and where hospital wards come from.

- ALL. The obligation to wear masks and gloves to avoid contagions, a safe distance and all possible precautions, including burned infected bodies, somehow bring us back to the pandemic that we are all experiencing today, and it is interesting to understand how historical pandemics are been dealt with in the past years up to today.
